Ful-On Tri lead the Triathlon London League after 6 rounds - 30 June 2009 Basking in the summer sunshine, Hillingdon played host to Round 6 of the Triathlon London League on Sunday, with possibly its biggest field ever. As with last year, Euan Lees (Ful-On Tri) was beaten in a sprint finish in this swim-run-bike format event, this time by Matt Chapman (SLH Tri Club) in 1:12:18. Just 30secs behind, Stuart Archer (Ful-On Tri) took third place. In the ladies race, Karen Axelsdottir (Optima Racing Team) recorded a very swift time of 1:15:40 to take the win from Jess Taylor (Ful-On Tri) in second and team mate Rebecca Adams in third. The men’s vet race was also hotly contested with Jon Horsman (Crystal Palace) finishing ahead of Simon Kenyon (Ful-On Tri) who snatched 2nd place from Tim Bishop (Optima Racing Team).
With a sea of yellow and black competing and hogging the podium, the results gave Ful-On Tri the league win on the day and push them to the top of the League table with three race wins out of the six races so far. Optima Racing Team took second place, but significantly didn’t get the triathlon win to help them challenge for top spot (your best 3 scores must include one triathlon race from the series). Whilst it’s not a sure thing, it will take a big push from Thames Turbo to topple Ful-On Tri in the next two races. Home team Hillingdon took the mob match win on the day, but significantly Ful-On Tri also sit top of the mob match table which will prove the decider in the event of a tie.
So all eyes will be on the final two league matches: Clash of the Tritons aquathlon on 15th August and the Jekyll & Hyde Park Duathlon on 25th October. For a full breakdown of the League standings and points scoring, please visit the Triathlon London League page.

Ful-On Tri blaze the League win at Crystal Palace - 07 June 2009 Round 5 of the Triathlon London League, the 2009 Crystal Palace Triathlon took place in glorious summer sunshine last Sunday. With the mercury rising and nearly 500 participants, competition was always going to be red hot. The refurbished competition pool now open, this year saw the race return to the traditional format of a 750m swim in fifteen 50m lengths, nine laps of the crit circuit round the sports centre on the bike, and a hilly two-lap run.
Last year’s second placed male and female both went on to take the honours this year, with Timothy Male (Thames Turbo) winning the men’s event in a time of 1:03:09 and Parys Edwards winning the female event in a blistering time of 1:08:15, and 15th place overall. Overall second place went to Nick Malynn (Ful-On Tri), just 20 seconds behind the winner and third place went to Matt Chapman (SLH Tri Club). Second female was 2007 winner and vet, Ruth Hutton (SLH Tri Club), with Lara Hawkings third. The Male vet race was very closely contested with Richard Evans (Met Police Tri) taking the win from Simon Kenyon (Ful-On Tri) and Des Adkinson (Tri Condor).
The league results saw a crucial league win for Ful-On Tri, with home team Crystal Palace in second place, and SLH Tri Club third. The Mob Match win went to Tri London who were out in force, with Ful-On Tri second and Serpentine third. The current overall league standings still see Optima Racing Team in front with Ful-On Tri and Thames Turbo sitting joint second in one of the closest League matches we’ve seen.
Round 6: Hillingdon Triathlon on 28th June promises to be an even hotter contest, with some big names on the start sheet. Entries to Hillingdon are now closed, but you can still enter Round 7: Clash of the Tritons on 15th August, when some scores may need to be settled. For a full breakdown of the League standings and points scoring, please visit the Triathlon London League page.

Optima Racing Team lead London League after 4 rounds - 12 May 2009 Over 140 competitors took part in the Morden 6n'6 Aquathlon on Sunday 10th May at Morden Park Pool, Round 4 of the Triathlon London League. This friendly event, organised by Kingfisher Triathletes and Z Tri. was helped in no small measure by the glorious May sunshine. James Lock (Thames Turbo) retained his title from last year in a new record time of 39:10. Jon Worcester (Met Police) finished second with 19-year old Bradley Hales (Optima Racing Team) third. For the Ladies, Lucy Bowen (Thames Turbo) took the win in a time of 44:45 with Alice Keane second and Karen Axelsdottir third (both Optima Racing Team). The results see Optima Racing Team taking the lead in the London League for the first time with two League wins out of 4 races. Thames Turbo are in second place, with Ful-On Tri third. Three Clubs take a win a-piece in Triathlon London League - 22 April 2009 Just like London buses, you wait all year for the start of the Triathlon London League races, and then three come along at once! With three races in a week, the League got off to a far warmer start than the 2008 series at the Thames Turbo Sprint triathlon on a mild and windless Easter Monday. Racing at the sharp end was very close, with the host club wheeling out the big guns and their disc wheels! Home athlete Dion Harrison took the win after spending most of the winter training in Stellenbosch, South Africa for a 2009 season focussed on longer distances. Second place went to fellow Turbo, Timothy Males, with 3rd place taken by Bradley Hayles (Optima Racing Team). The women’s race was even closer with Fiona Moorehead-Lane (Optima Racing Team), taking a 3-second win over Lucy Bowen (Thames Turbo), with another Turbo, Holly Tomlinson taking 3rd. As in past years, the League win in this event went to the home team, Thames Turbo with Optima Racing Team taking 2nd place and current league champions, Ful-On Tri in 3rd.
The weather did its worst between Tuesday and Friday, only to dawn bright and sunny again on Saturday for Round 2, and new addition to the League, the Ful-On Duathlon at Longcross Test Track. 2006 World Champion, Tim Don (Prologue Bikes), was the star turn at this race, winning by a comfortable margin from Tristan Shipsides (Ful-On Tri) and Andrew Mercer (Thames Turbo). The men’s vet race proved much closer, with last year’s winner Gavin Francis (Optima Racing Team) pipping Simon Kenyon and Richard Staite (both Ful-On Tri) to the post. The Women’s Open race was won by Lucy Bowen (Thames Turbo) in impressive form from Parys Edwards (Ful-On Tri), with Nicola Boyd (Optima Racing Team) third. The League win for Round 2 went to home team, Ful-On Tri with Thames Turbo taking 2nd place and Optima Racing Team 3rd.
The next day saw the Dragon Slayer Duathlon return to its roots as a cycle circuit based duathlon at the new Redbridge Cycling Centre. The course proved extremely challenging, with a largely off-road run on the mountain bike circuit, complete with jumps, berms and ultra-sharp zig-zag sections. The bike course comprised 20 laps of the road racing circuit, with a sharp 12% gradient on the approach to the finish line. A few competitors had raced the day before at the Ful-On Duathlon, but were out racing again to gain valuable League points for their clubs! The event was won by Justin Webb (Optima Racing Team) from Nick Malynn (Ful-On Tri) and Timothy Male (Thames Turbo). The women’s race was won by Karen Axelsdottir (Optima Racing Team) from Holly Tomlinson (Thames Turbo) and Rebecca Adams (Optima Racing Team). Optima Racing Team took the the League win from Thames Turbo, with Ful-On Tri scraping 3rd.
So with three clubs showing a win a-piece after three rounds, it looks like this year’s Triathlon London League is going to be a close-run thing. Rule changes this year mean that a tie on first place will be decided by each club’s standing in the mob match, so it's wise to get as many club members racing each event as possible. For more details on how to take part in the league and current rankings, please visit our Triathlon London League page. The next race is Round 4: Morden 6n’6 Aquathlon on 10th May, entries for which are now open.

12 YEAR-OLD TRIATHLETE SMASHES WORLD RECORD… IN ROWING - 16 April 2009A young London club triathlete has destroyed the 1-12 years Half Marathon Indoor Rowing World Record.
12 year old Katie Metalli broke the record for rowing the 21097 metres on an indoor rowing machine at the Northcroft Leisure Centre in Newbury on Wednesday 15th April.
Although the record of 4:58:09.0 had been unbeaten since 2004 when it was recorded by American Beonka Pope, Katie reduced the record by a staggering margin of more than three hours as she broke through the sub-two hour mark to complete the row in 1 hour 43 minutes 40.6 seconds.
Katie joins the ranks of just 42 other lightweight women who have completed the half-marathon distance in the past 12 months and she is now the 25th fastest lightweight female (of any age group) in the world this year!
Afterwards she put her achievement largely down to a slip of paper attached to a chair in front of her rowing machine “I received a personal good luck email from Rebecca Romero on Monday and put it so I could see it on the day. With about 7 or 8k left to row, it really made the difference and I thought of her victory in Beijing and that spurred me on” Romero was the Olympic Silver medallist in Rowing in 2004 who won gold last year in cycling.
She also currently leads the world best times in 8 different distances this season and has previously already won 2 British National Titles. A few weeks ago she also collected her second silver medal at the National Junior Indoor Rowing Champs in London; repeating her position at the 2008 event.
The remarkable thing however is not the world record but that Katie has never rowed on the water!
She is now normally found riding her bike, swimming or running for her main sport of triathlon where she represents Jetstream Tri Club in North London and is the current London Region Tristar 2 Champion and also came 9th for the region at last year’s IRC.
She is also cycles for Hillingdon Slipstreamers and is currently leading the National Cycling rankings and has been a member of the British Cycling DHL Sprint School development squad for the past 2 years.
Since she started competing in triathlons at the age of 8 she has won 198 different swimming, cycling, running, triathlon, duathlon and aquathlon events as well as athletics events such as javelin, shot and discus County Javelin Champion in 2007.
She is also a member of the Southern Region Talent ID Squad for Modern Pentathlon.
The all-round athlete has already been recognised for her past performances and was runner-up at the recent Basingstoke and Deane Sports Council Awards for her performances in 2008.
She also finished third in the same Awards 2007 and was also the youngest-ever winner of the prestigious Michael Austin Harlick Outstanding Sports Person award in 2006; previous winners of which include England’s rugby world cup winning captain Jonny Wilkinson and GB International runner Steph Twell.
She was raising money from her friends and family for Spectrum; her school charity which she attends in Newbury and which helps people with autism where her efforts were boosted by more than £50 worth of donations collected on the day.
Katie is now contemplating an attack on the current 1k and 10k world records before her birthday on April 29th after which time at 13 she will be too old!
Further details can be obtained from Katie’s father Peter Metalli on:
Email: peter@metalli.co.uk.

Classification of Disabled Athletes for Triathlon - 01 February 2009As the number of disabled athletes competing in triathlon increases at a consistent rate, British Triathlon is keen to offer disabled triathletes the opportunity to become officially classified in advance of the 2009 race season and the 2009 British Triathlon Disabled Championships.
Disabled triathletes who intend to compete in the International competition, National Championships and the National Disabled Triathlete Ranking Series must be officially classified. Disabled athletes who are members of one of the Home Nations, but only intend to compete at local level, are also encouraged to complete the Classification process, to assist the Federation in monitoring its progress within the disabled development of the sport.
Officially classified athletes will have their classification details printed on their Home Nation membership card, and will not require to produce any further documentation at National or International competition.
Physically Disabled Triathletes (athletes with amputation, paralysis, deformity, cerebral palsy, etc) who require classification can contact Julian Wills on julianwills@britishtriathlon.org or 01822 850454. A series of classification days will be held across the country at appropriate venues for athletes to attend. The venues will relate to the athletes location.
Visually Impaired and Blind Triathletes who require classification must have their eyes officially tested by an Ophthalmologist / Optometrist, asking them to complete the attached ‘Competitors Medical Certificate’.
The completed certificate must be sent to British Blind Sport, who will process the certificate and membership of British Blind Sport. The British Blind Sport membership card is the only proof of classification that British Triathlon requires to witness. For additional information about British Blind Sport and the ‘Ophthalmologist process’ please contact Carole Baxter on carole.baxter@britishblindsport.org.uk
Currently there is only classified triathlon competition at National level for Triathletes with Learning Disabilities. Formal classification is managed by the UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disabilities. Presentation of UKSAPLD membership card is the only requirement for British Triathlon classification. For advice on completing the UKSAPLD classification process please contact Kathy Anstey on sport@mencap.org.uk or 01924 234912.
Currently there is only classified triathlon competition at National level for Hearing Impaired and Deaf Triathletes. Athletes competing within this classification must have a hearing impairment as defined by Deaflympics and British Deaf Sport. Official audiogrammes can be obtained through www.ukdeafsport.org.uk Presentation of fully completed audiogrammes is the requirement for British Triathlon classification.

Ful-On Tri win the Triathlon London League 2008 - 09 November 2008 Sunday 26th October heralded the last race in the Triathlon London League 2008 – The Jekyll and Hyde Duathlon – and a very wet and windy day to boot. The race saw a record entry for the event, with over 150 turning up to race, despite the conditions. Full marks go to Ful-On Tri for an excellent turnout and a very vocal support team in their bid to secure victory in the League. Their depth in numbers also secured the men's and women's team prizes. Congratulations to host club Serpentine for a very well organised race.
Overall victory in the men’s race went to Andrew Mercer (Serpentine) with Tristan Shipsides (Ful-On Tri) a close second and Eoin O’Connell (Serpentine) in third. The Ladies’ race was won by Parys Edwards (Ful-On Tri) narrowly beating team-mate Ellen Pooley, with Joanna Carritt (Tri London) third. Jon Horsman (Crystal Palace Tri), one of our Triathlon London region development coaches, secured victory in the Male Vet category, with Paula Rogers-Dixon taking the Female Vet win.
The League standings from the race saw Ful-On Tri take first place, with Serpentine second and Tri London third. Ful-On Tri also secured the race win in the Mob Match. The final results of the League see both Ful-On Tri and Thames Turbo taking 3 match wins a-piece. However, counting back on second place scores (the decider in the event of a tie), the overall winners of the Triathlon London League 2008 are Ful-On Tri Club who also secure victory in the Mob Match overall standings. Second place in the League goes to Thames Turbo, with Optima Racing Team third, and East London Triathletes and Serpentine joint fourth. The winners trophy will presented at the Triathlon London Awards Party to be held in January 2009. For full details of the rankings, please refer to the Triathlon London League page.

Ful-On Tri take League win at Crystal Palace - 30 September 2008 Close to 400 competitors took part in the Crystal Palace Triathlon on 21st September - the first carbon neutral event in the UK (for more details see the article in the Features section). With building work continuing on the 50m pool, the swim took place in the training pool and was reduced to 400m from the regular 750m swim. The bike featured a technical 9-lap 20k ride on a closed road circuit and competitors finished with a 2 lap 5k run. With valuable Triathlon London League points at stake, competition was fierce at the top end of the field. Andrew Mercer (Serpentine) was the winning senior male with Timothy Male (Thames Turbo) second and James Beckinsale (Optima Racing Team) third. The ladies' senior race was won by Jill Parker (Tri London), with Parys Edwards (Ful-On Tri) second and Esther Evans (Thames Turbo) third. First male vet was Richard Evans (Met Police Tri) and female vet winner was Olivia Hetreed (Tri London).
Point scoring in the League event was a tight-run thing between Thames Turbo, reigning champions, and Ful-On Tri Club, with Ful-On Tri Club snatching the League win by just 4 points. Third place went to Optima Racing Team. It was nice to see so many clubs with depth in numbers, with the Mob Match finishing order as follows: Serpentine, Tri London, Crystal Palace, Ful-On Tri, Optima Racing Team, Clapham Chasers, Thames Turbo, Met Police Tri, SLH Tri Club and Wimbledon Windmilers.
The result stills sees Thames Turbo sitting at the top of the League overall after 6 rounds. However, with one further race to go (The Jekyll & Hyde Park Duathlon on 26th October), Ful-On Tri are in prime position to snatch victory at the last hurdle. Should Ful-On Tri win in Hyde Park (and the start list suggests they might), then they would equal Thames Turbo on 3 wins a piece and beat them on number of second place positions. So, it looks like the League will prove exciting to the end! For a full breakdown of the League standings and points scoring, please visit the Triathlon London League 2008 page.

Inter Regional Championships - 02 September 2008IRC Results
I hope nobody minds if we blow a huge London Region trumpet to herald the efforts of our young triathletes this weekend. Every single one of them performed to the best of their abilities. There were some fantastic results, attached HERE is a listing. The competition was fierce across all the age groups which make the results even more impressive.
All of the athletes in the London team laid themselves on the line, none left anything in reserve so the result for London as 5th overall was truly a team effort. Armanni and Luke battled all the way, Alice probably has the best ever performance of a London Youth girl and led Molly and Daniella to the best result London has seen from it’s Youth girls. Pedro, Matt and Misha had a tough task, but Matt had the 9th fastest cycle of the day, Misha had the best swim/run sections I’ve seen from him and Pedro came through really strongly on the run.
Congratulations to all the triathletes, coaches James, Wayne all the clubs, coaches and the supportive parents from across the London Region that have helped produced these great results.
Well done to the whole team:- Katie Metalli, Sophie Edwardson, Lewis Hawkins, Mason Baylis, Sky Draper, Armanni Antoine-Chagar, Jack Spence, Luke Penney, Alice Keane, Molly Renfer, Daniela Raffel, Pedro de la Mucha, Matthew Myers and Misha Newman.

Thames Turbo top the League after Round 5 Clash - 19 August 2008 A bright and breezy Saturday morning saw some hot competition and a record entry at the Clash of the Tritons race at Eltham College in Greenwich, Round 5 of the Triathlon London League. James Lock of Thames Turbo won the race in convincing fashion, with Euan Lees of Ful-On Tri taking second place and Toby Matthewson of Optima Racing Team taking third. In the battle for the League win, however, it was the women’s race which was the decider with Lucy Bowen of Thames Turbo taking the win and 11th spot overall to lead the Turbos to victory. Parys Edwards of Ful-On Tri put in a gutsy performance to take second place in the women’s senior race, with Stephanie Robson, also Ful-On Tri in third place. There was a tremendous amount of young talent in the race, which is very encouraging to see, and once again Greenwich Tritons delivered a great race, along with their now legendary home baked cakes and refreshments.
At least ten London clubs fielded enough athletes to score as teams in the League, and these were (in finishing order): Thames Turbo, Ful-On Tri Club, Met Police Tri Club, Greenwich Tritons, Crystal Palace Tri, East London Triathletes, Trent Park RC, Optima Racing Team, Serpentine and Walthamstow Tritons. The Mob Match win went to Ful-On Tri, with Met Police Tri second and Greenwich Tritons third.
The overall standings in the Triathlon London League now see Thames Turbo sitting pretty at the top on 3 wins, with Ful-On Tri second and Optima Racing Team third. Ful-On Tri lead the Mob Match overall. Only two rounds remain in the League: Crystal Palace Triathlon on 21st September and Jekyll & Hyde Park Duathlon on 26th October. The Crystal Palace Triathlon is already full, and operating a waiting list on entries, whilst entries for Jekyll & Hyde will open in early September. It should be an exciting finish to our most competitive League race series to date. For full details of the League, and the current rankings, please visit the Triathlon London League 2008 page.

Triathlon London Regional Champs 2008 at Eton - 29 July 2008 Saturday 19th July saw as windy a day as most observers could ever recall at Dorney Lake, making conditions tough for all competitors in a standard-distance race which incorporated the inaugural London and South East Regional Championships. The winds blew from the top of the lake down towards the start/finish and transition areas, meaning that athletes swam into the kind of waves normally only seen on sea swims, and had to adjust their breathing patterns accordingly. Similarly, each of the 8 bike and 4 run laps required competitors to work hard into a headwind before sailing gleefully back in the opposite direction.
The race for overall victory took place in the 35-39 age group, where Thames Valley Triathletes' Joel Winter was first into transition in 21:15, followed by Ful-On Tri's Euan Lees in 23:46 and another TVT athlete, Sharkie Jaggard, 40 seconds further behind. Jaggard passed Lees half way through the bike ride, and extended his advantage to 20 seconds by the end, with Winter now only 40 seconds ahead. Meanwhile John Lund of Serpentine had closed to within 90 seconds with one of the day's fastest bike splits. A tired-looking Lees was unable to keep up with Jaggard on the run, though both overtook Winter on the first lap. Jaggard took his win, and the South East Championship, in 2:09:56, while Lees in second had the consolation of the London Championship in 2:11:18. John Lund finished second London athlete in 2:13:50, with Paul Perry of Thames Turbo third Londoner in 2:14:16.
In the Ladies’ London Championship, first and second were a close race between Angela Spatz of Trent Park RC in 2:40:28 and Becky Glover (unattached) in 2:40:47. The next two positions were also close, with Charlotte East of Wimbledon Windmilers taking third in 2:44:02 and Nicola Boyd of Optima Racing Team taking fourth in 2:44:27. Full results are on the Triathlon London Regional Champs page.

Home team Hillingdon prosper in Round 4 of Triathlon London League - 14 July 2008 Round 4 of the Triathlon London League featured the last race in the Hillingdon Tri Series which took place on Sunday in perfect weather conditions. With the more unusual swim-run-bike format, there was a close battle between Matt Molloy and Euan Lees of Ful-On Tri in the men’s race. A 3-second gap gave Matt the win over Euan, and 3rd and 4th place were even tighter with the 3rd place verdict going to top vet George Stewart of Hillingdon Triathletes. In the ladies race, last year's winner and vet Ruth Hutton of SLH Tri took the win once again, with Edwina Carter and Karen Alexsdottir, both Optima Racing Team, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. In all, nearly 100 athletes enjoyed both the triathlon and duathlon races, and the morning finished with the traditional free doughnuts and drinks.
The home team mustered strength in numbers, bagging the League and Mob Match wins on the day for Hillingdon. Second place in the League went to Ful-On Tri, with Optima Racing Team 3rd, SLH Tri Club 4th, and new London club Clapham Chasers taking 5th in their first team result in the Triathlon London League – welcome to the fun!
Overall standings in the League after 4 rounds still sees Ful-On Tri in the lead, with Optima Racing Team 2nd. However, many London clubs, including reigning League champions Thames Turbo, have yet to score in 3 races and with 3 rounds still to go, it’s all to play for... Remember it’s your top 3 scores that count, so if your club hasn’t yet fielded a team in the League events, it’s not too late to start! Full rules, results and League standings can be found on our Triathlon London League 2008 page.
