The Dave Aitchison SportsAid Fund has been launched by Dave's family and Ful-On Tri Club to assist talented young triathletes in the Triathlon London region to succeed in the sport. Athletes who receive funding must be identified and nominated by British Triathlon, based on their talent and sporting results. Applicants must be aged between 12 and 25 years old; be a member of the Triathlon London IRC squad, Triathlon London Academy, Triathlon England talent squad or GB Age Group team; and live and train in the Triathlon London region. The ride has now become an annual event with all profits going direct to the Dave Aitchison Fund. This year's ride takes place on Saturday 27th September.

Crystal Palace Triathlon UPDATE - 05 May 2008

The refurbishment of the 50m pool will not be completed in time for the race on 21 September 2008. As a result, the swim will now take place in the 25m training pool at the NSC. As this pool has five lanes (0.9m deep) we have had to change the swim from 750m to 400m. The organisers apologise for this change to the race format and hope to return to the full sprint distance in the 50m pool in 2009.

The race format is now -
Swim = 400m - 16 lengths in 25m pool
Bike = 20km - 9 laps of closed road circuit in park
Run = 5km - 2 laps in park

For more information please visit the CPT website: http://www.crystalpalace-tri.co.uk/race/2008-race/2008-race.htm

Ful-On Tri top Triathlon London League after Round 2 - 05 May 2008

Declan Doyle (left) of Optima Racing Team stormed to victory at the inaugural off-road Dragonslayer MTB Sprint Triathlon on Sunday. Hot on his heals were Nik Haynes and Euan Lees, both Ful-On Tri, taking second and third place respectively. First female home, and an impressive 8th overall, was Fiona Moorehead-Lane of East London Triathletes. Some 7 minutes later, there was a tough battle between Mette Nielson (Optima Racing Team) who finished second, Julie Milroy (Ful-On Tri) third and Katie Ward (East London Triathletes) a close fourth.

The fine bank holiday weather saw three clubs fighting it out for the League win on the day, with Ful-On Tri and East London Triathletes scoring equal points to share top place, and Optima Racing Team coming in third. The win now places Ful-On Tri top of both the League and the Mob Match after the first two events. Next weekend sees the third round of the League with the Morden 6n'6 aquathlon on 11th May. For full details of the Triathlon London League and details of the rankings, please refer to the Triathlon London League 08 page.

Ful-On Tri turn Five and gets Starmark Accreditation! - 16 April 2008

Ful-On Tri Club has two fantastic reasons to celebrate - it’s just celebrated its 5th birthday AND been awarded Starmark accreditation making it one of the first London clubs to receive such an accolade. The club, based in Fulham, south west London, celebrated both achievements with cake and champagne at a party held on April 10th, five years to the day since a small group of triathletes including the club’s head coach Alan Hanley, chairman Conan Gibney and event director Siobhan Browlow held their first training session.

The club has gone from strength to strength since it began with just 20 members training once a week,  and now boasts 256 members attending sessions five days a week run by its 22 coaches. Ful-On Tri has also donated thousands to charity, raising £2,000 through its 2006 naked calendar for the charity Aspire, and £4,000 from its Legs of Steel cycle ride organised after the untimely death of one of its champion members, Dave Aitchison  last year, for a SportsAid fund set up in Dave’s name.

Jon Train, Triathlon London Regional Development Manager, joined in the birthday party celebrations at a Fulham pub to present Ful-On Tri with its Starmark Accreditation, awarded for all aspects of the club’s operation from its management by committee to its constitution, health and safety rules and code of conduct for individuals and coaches. The award means increased funding for Ful-On Tri as well as the London region.

Thames Turbo lead the Triathlon London League after Round 1 at Hampton - 25 March 2008

Over 300 hardy souls braved the wintry Easter Monday weather to compete in Round 1 of the Triathlon London League 2008 at Hampton Pool. Unsurprisingly the league win went to race hosts Thames Turbo with all five of their team finishing in the top 20. The race was won by Daniel Corner, with Thames Turbo taking the next 3 places: Richard Legge, Dion Harrison and James Stratton. Fastest lady on the day was Edwina Carter from Optima Racing Team, with Sophie Whitworth second and Turbo's Lucy Bowen in third place.

The turnout was incredible, given the ice, sleet and snow that competitors had to contend with. Seven London clubs fielded enough athletes to score in the League and finished in the following order: Thames Turbo, Ful-On Tri, Optima Racing Team, Hillingdon, East London Triathletes, Serpentine and Met Police. The Mob Match results showed great turnouts from at least 17 London clubs and was also topped by Thames Turbo with Ful-On Tri second and Hillingdon in third place. Congratulations to all who competed - you all deserve a medal for braving the conditions!

All eyes now focus on the Dragonslayer in it's new MTB sprint triathlon format on 4th May to see who will top the League for that event. For full details of the League results and team scoring requirements, please refer to the Triathlon London League page.

Inaugural Triathlon London Regional Championships - 27 February 2008

Human Race have announced the launch of the inaugural Triathlon London Regional Triathlon Championships and South East Regional Triathlon Championships, both of which will be held at Dorney Lake, Eton on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July 2008. The Championships are expected to attract over one thousand competitors and are set to showcase some outstanding racing from many of the UK’s leading triathletes, across individual and team entries.

This exciting development has been launched by the Regional Associations, with the support of Human Race, in response to the significant increase in participation in the sport within London and the South East Region. Combined, London (with 34) and the South East (with 44) make up 78 of the 235 triathlon clubs across the UK. In addition, well over half of the (estimated) 100,000 active triathletes in the UK live or work in London or the South East, which sees these two regions having the largest share of the sport and some of triathlon’s best talent.

The Championships are open to individuals and club members, living or working within the Boroughs of London and the South East Region. Racing will take place over two days offering individual entry over the standard distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run) on Saturday 19th July and team relay and Team Time Trial entry categories over 3/4 distance (800m swim, 30k bike, 7.5k run) on Sunday 20th July.

John Petrides, Chairman of Triathlon London, comments: “We are delighted to be working with Human Race to host the Regional Championships. Our aim is to increase participation, clubs, members and coaches across the region and the Championships not only give our triathletes the opportunity to have a goal to work towards but to continue to raise the profile and level of the sport.”

John Lunt, Director of Human Race, says: “We are very excited to be hosting the inaugural Regional Championships for London and the South East. These regions are home to many of the UK’s leading triathletes eligible for entry and this event promises to see some very exciting racing.”

Crystal Palace Triathlon 2008 goes Carbon-Neutral - 26 February 2008

...but don’t worry Carbon bikes still allowed!

The annual Crystal Palace Triathlon organised by local club Crystal Palace Triathletes (CPT) will be held on Sunday 21 September 2008 and is now open for online entries.

Online entries - http://www.entrycentral.com/index.php?raceID=100122

And if you need another excuse, by signing up for the race, you can tick off that resolution to ‘become more green’ and be more conscious about how you impact on the environment too! The race is aiming to go carbon-neutral in 2008 in a bid to cut emissions produced as a result of the race.

Consultants Zero Carbon Events will be assisting in establishing the carbon footprint for the event and advising CPT on how to make it a carbon neutral event.

The idea came about as a result of discussion by a few members of the club who were concerned about the amount of waste generated on the day. Whilst temporary recycling bins were erected to help deal with the plethora of plastic bottles consumed by athletes and marshals alike, discussions soon moved to wider impacts of the race in terms of the energy needed to run the race and the transport choice of the competitors arriving on the day.

Club Chair John Petrides says: "Whilst in previous years we have focused on putting on a bigger and better race each year, we are keen to ensure that we do not do this at the detriment of the environment. The club feels strongly about the impact our triathlon has on both the local and global environment and we feel that this is our way of making a small but worthwhile contribution."

As a result, the Club are now keen to ensure that the 2008 race is organised both in the run up (and on the day) in the most energy-efficient manner possible.  Whilst CPT is committed to reducing the amount of waste generated and energy consumed it is likely that some carbon will need to be off-set. This will be done on the advice of their consultants and club members will get to vote on which carbon off-set projects will benefit. These will be from Gold Standard/ Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) Projects.

Club Notes
Crystal Palace Triathletes is a friendly and sociable club with over 120 members in and around the Crystal Palace area. The Club has members of all standards. Most members participate in sprint and Olympic distance races, with a growing number in middle distance and Ironman.

The Crystal Palace Triathlon is held annually at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace and consists of a 750m swim in the 50m pool, nine laps (20k) of a closed circuit within the park (closed to traffic!) and two laps (5k) of the same course for the run, before finishing in the renowned athletics stadium.

What is Carbon Neutral? This is where CO2 emissions have been measured (as a result of an activity), reductions are identified and the remaining emissions are offset through various carbon projects around the world. For more information on any of the above please contact Ruki Sidhwa on 07778 873702.

The race limit is 300 and there will be prizes for the first three men/women; first three male/female vets, along with team prizes (men: 4 to score; women: 3 to score) to promote a little inter-club rivalry. Online entries opened today through the following link:
http://www.fulontri.com/FulOnDuathlon/tabid/169/Default.aspx

FOT beat TT in Richmond Park Mob Match - 17 December 2007

Ful-On Tri won the mob match against Thames Turbo held at the 5k Richmond Park Time Trial on Saturday by 1,380 to 2,086, a margin of 706 points. Ninety-six runners fought off illness, shopping and Christmas parties to make the 9am start in Richmond Park, with Ful-On Tri massing 52 starters against Thames Turbo’s 44.

Ful-On Tri dominated the top end of the mob match with 10 finishers in the first 15. Andrew McFarlane of Ful-on Tri broke the course record by six seconds, winning in 16:34. Thames Turbo’s Esther Evans, world age-group duathlon champion, smashed the women’s course record by two and a half minutes, winning in 18:17. Esther also set a new all-comers age-graded performance record for the RPTT of 81.31%. Tristan Shipsides of Ful-On Tri took second in the men’s mob match in 16:54, followed by Turbo Roger Barr in 17:11. In the women’s, Ellen Pooley took second in 19:21, just ahead of Turbo Lucy Bowen in 19:22. Three Thames Turbo under 14s ran well: John Birchall, Alex Rowe, and Peter Frame.

Thames Turbo claimed the unofficial prize for first dog and most joggers, although they did manage to win eight age-groups to Ful-On Tri's six. Ful-On Tri kindly offered a mince pie to all runners before many headed off on their Saturday bike ride. A band of Turbos headed off to run a lap of the park, while those that had already done enough training for the week enjoyed a coffee and bun in Pembroke Lodge. Thanks to Euan Lees, Nigel Clemens and the RPTT organisers for arranging the match.

2007 Inter-Regional Championships wrap-up - 04 September 2007

The London IRC team departed for their long bus journey on Friday 31st of August to Glasgow for the Inter-Regional Championships. With many inspiration DVD's courtesy of James ( London Team Manager) the team was amped for the following days competition. Saturday, competition day - the team arrived and warmed up with a lap of the bike circuit. 12:15pm race briefing and then 1pm we saw the first of our team hit the water. T2 girls Armanni Antoine-Chager and Eliza Cottington put in a competitive performance for London laying a solid platform for the rest of the group, with Armanni picking up 10th place in a very strong competition! Good performances by the entire London outfit saw a much improved team from 2006, with the team achieving it's goal of avoiding the wooden spoon in 2007. Team Manager James Beckinsale was happy with the efforts of the team saying "...the team was very competitive and could have sneaked under to top 7 barrier."I would like to thank all the parents and families that made the trip to Glasgow to support the team and hope that they enjoyed the strong competition. Finally I would like to extend my thanks to James Beckinsale who again volunteered his time to run a training day for the athletes and also travel and attend the IRC's in Glasgow. Regional Club and Coach Funding awarded from Sport England - 29 August 2007

Sport England recently announced an investment of £38.3 million into community sports clubs and coaches across England. Of this substantial figure the London region as a whole was awarded £3,552,605 to increase opportunities for people across London to participate in sport and recreation. Initially triathlon's regional bid to secure some of this funding was deferred as Sport England and the London Sports Board required further regional details to support the National Bid. After collating a solid support document regionally , the proposal was re-submitted late June for consideration. I am happy to announce that Triathlon London region in association with Triathlon England has been successful in securing £99,000 over 3 years to invest in club an coach development.
As part of the process above, the region's proposal outlined that the region would invest a percentage of the funding into employing 2 part-time coaches (18 hours per week) to be deployed across the region coaching novice junior and adult athlete in priority areas outlined in the London Regional Development Plan.
Coach Job Descriptions and application details will be posted on the National and Regional websites in the near future.
For Further information about either the London Development Plan or the regional Club and Coach proposal please contact ebonyblake@britishtriathlon.org

Thames Turbo Win Triathlon London League 2007 - it's official! - 19 August 2007

The Clash of the Tritons aquathlon, the final round in the Triathlon London League, had a record entry with 140 athletes taking to the start line in bright and breezy conditions on Saturday morning. Thankfully the rain held off, and the 500m swim and 5k run saw some fast finishing times. First home was Greenwich Tritons own Chris Lionnet in 23:58 with Andre van der Merwe second and Dion Harrison of Thames Turbo third. First female finisher was Bethan Hopewell from Ful-On Tri, with Charmaine Wheeler second and Justina Heslop third. Race organisers, Greenwich Tritons, put on a great race, and it was encouraging to watch the kids race after the adults with some very promising talent on show. Eltham College proved a very pleasant setting and the spread of tea/coffee and home-made cakes was tremendously popular with all the athletes, not to mention the lucky dip prizes!

The League and mob-match wins went to Ful-On Tri on the day, who had no fewer than 16 members racing. The final rankings for the Triathlon London League 2007 confirm Thames Turbo as the overall winner, with Ful-On Tri second and SLH Tri Club third. The Mob-Match overall winner is Serpentine with Ful-On Tri and Thames Turbo tied in second place. For the full rankings, please visit our Triathlon London League page.

National Club Relay Championships - Nottingham - 13 August 2007

Beautiful sunny weather greeted the 250 Londoners racing at the National Club Sprint Relay Championships in Nottingham on Saturday. The campsite and club village area at the race were choc-a-bloc with competing club branding, Bill Black was doing the commentary and the music was pumping, creating a great atmosphere for the race. Ful-On Tri (14 teams), Thames Turbo (13 teams), and Serpentine (10 teams) were the most heavily represented of the nine London Clubs attending, Tri London, Hillingdon, Optima Racing Team, Trent Park, Wimbledon Windmilers and Team Body Lab making up the rest.

The event involves teams of four competing in tag-relay through the 400m swim, 15k bike and 5k run in succession. In the mixed category Tri London’s mixed team of Jill Parker, Joanna Carritt, Steven Lord and Phil Couson picked up the bronze medal, with Optima Racing Team in 5th place and Thames Turbo 10th. Ful-On Tri’s Ladies team of Jessica Taylor, Natalie Creswick, Ellen Pooley and Bethan Hopewell finished 4th in the ladies race, with Thames Turbo in 5th place and Wimbledon Windmilers 7th. The Men’s race in the afternoon saw Thames Turbo’s team of Dion Harrison, Martin Williamson, Richard Legg and James Stratton finish in 4th place, with Ful-On Tri men in 7th position overall. The highest finishing London vet team also came from Ful-On Tri with Phil Roker, David Sharpe, Richard Keers and Greg Keers finishing in 12th position.

Most clubs made a weekend social out of the event, staking out club territory in the campsite next to the race course. There was a good amount of London club interaction with Thames Turbo and Ful-On Tri sharing a coach to Nottingham’s Oceana night club for some dancing till the early hours. Who knows - perhaps more London clubs will join them for this next year?

Thames Turbo top the League after Round 4 at Crystal Palace - 28 May 2007
cpwinners07.jpgHeavy rain greeted early racers at the Crystal Palace sprint triathlon on Sunday making conditions on the bike course quite hazardous. Over 460 athletes braved the conditions, making this the largest race in the Triathlon London League.

Final results see the race win go to Thames Turbo's Dion Harrison, with Martin Williamson of Thames Turbo second and David O'Toole third. Fastest female was Ruth Hutton from SLH Tri Club, with Antonia Edgerton second and Ful-On Tri's Jessica Taylor in third place.

The race gave Thames Turbo their third League win in succession, almost guaranteeing them as overall League winners for 2007. Only Ful-On Tri club is in a position to topple them if they can win at both Hillingdon and Greenwich. SLH picked up second League position with Tri London third. Mob match points saw Serpentine steal the lead with around 40 finishers, Crystal Palace second and East London Triathletes third.

Overall League and Mob Match rankings can be found on the Triathlon London League page, where you need to login to view the rankings.

Female cyclists can earn £50 in London 2012 film this weekend! - 15 May 2007
A company called New Moon is filming a scene that is meant to look like the London 2012 Womens Olympic Road Race on Saturday 19th May. Any interested female cyclists MUST pre-register and will be paid £50 each.

The shoot is centred around a drinks station along the race, where a couple of cyclists will grab water bottles from an olympic volunteer (the focal point of the film is about the volunteer). They will be filming this scene, as well as some generic riding scenes. As with any filming, they may have to do each shot several times, so your patience with this would be appreciated! Time: 9.00am till about 1.00pm. Meet: Rosary Gate, Battersea Park London, SW8.

Please note as this is a ROAD RACE event, you will need to be riding competition road bikes with drop down handlebars and no tribars fitted. Interested athletes should email natalie.wilson@new-moon.co.uk or call 07809 874 332.

Round 3 of Triathlon London League sees Thames Turbo sitting pretty - 14 May 2007
mordenwin.jpgA damp start to Sunday morning in London didn't deter over 125 athletes from taking part in the Morden 6n6 Aquathlon race, Round 3 of the Triathlon London League. The race win went to Euan Lees of Ful-On Tri after competing neck and neck with Dion Harrison of Thames Turbo all the way, only to take him on the sprint finish. Third place went to Lee Greatorex of Belgrave Harriers. First placed female was Esther Evans of Thames Turbo, with Ruth Hutton of SLH second and Kerry McGawley third.

The League rankings for the race are very close, and since the results are not yet finalised and it appears a number of names are missing from the results sheet, we can only tell you the provisional results. These see Thames Turbo taking the win, with Ful-On Tri second, SLH third and Serpentine fourth, all very close on points! On the Mob Match scores, Serpentine had depth in numbers to claim the win, with Thames Turbo second and Ful-On Tri third. As soon as the results have been finalised, they'll be updated on the Triathlon London League page for registered users to view.
