The Triathlon London Academy was originally launched in May 2008, but has undergone some changes to align it with British Triathlon's performance pathways for a re-launch in October 2009.
British Triathlon currently has 5 performance levels:
The Triathlon London Academy aims to identify and develop talented young athletes (aged 14-18 years) within the London region. The Academy (along with personal coaches) focuses on the long-term development of these athletes, enhancing their skills to allow a seamless progression onto the Olympic Talent Squad (OTS). We look at developing skills such as open water swimming, bike handling, running, transition and drafting. We also look at nutrition, strength/ conditioning and time/ injury management.
In 2010 London had one athlete on the OTS – Sky Draper; in 2011 London has three OTS athletes – James Davis, Nicole Raymond and Sky Draper.
Selection to the Olympic Talent Squad is based on swim/run time point scores and an assessment of the athlete's capacity for further improvement and commitment to triathlon. The combined points score for swim/run determines bronze, silver, gold or gold+ standards, according to the following classification:
Selection criteria for the Triathlon London Academy:
The minimum classification level to be part of the Triathlon London Academy for 2001 is Silver from current race results/ official time trials.
The selection distances are:
The minimum "average" silver times needed to be considered for the Academy are highlighted in the table below. The times listed represent Gold (170 points); Silver (155 points) and Bronze (135 points). For example, a 14-year old male swims 200m in 2:22 = 155pts and runs 1500m in 4:57 = 155pts, so total score is 310 points and the SILVER standard. Times at a glance:
Triathlon London Academy selection days:
There will be Academy selection days each year where athletes will need to demonstrate the ability to gain silver classification through performing swim and run time trials. London is hoping that the selection day in 2011 (post season around Sep/ Oct) will require athlete to be of GOLD standard Academy Athletes 2010/ 2011
Dave Aitchison Fund
Athletes achieving silver standard or above are eligible for consideration for SportsAid funding through the Dave Aitchison Fund. Funding applications must be submitted through the Triathlon London Academy Head Coach by November for approval by British Triathlon. The fund has really helped athletes over the past few years and we would encourage all athletes to participate in the Legs of Steel event hosted by Ful on Tri. Contact
Coaches/parents/ athletes if you feel you know of or have an athlete who is suitable for the Academy email James Beckinsale the Triathlon London Academy Head Coach and he will be happy to answer any queries.
